Peatland restoration at Clach Liath
Peatland restoration at Clach Liath began during 2023 and was completed in 2025. Over 9,000 peat dams and 53 timber dams were installed into gullies and haggs to slow the flow of water and help raise the water table. Around 29,500 metres of ditches were blocked to help restore the natural hydrology of the peatland. And more than 103,000 metres of exposed, eroding peat on the sides of haggs and gullies was stabilised and covered with peatland vegetation.
A total of 416 hectares of degraded peatland were put on the road to recovery with specialist restoration techniques. Over time, the area is expected to return to a healthy, functioning peatland habitat that is again able to provide those many natural services from which we all benefit.
