 Sponsored Swim for the

Linda Norgrove Foundation

Kiltearn bay in the Cromarty Firth

September 9th 2021

Kiltearn bay in the Cromarty Firth has been particularly busy with swimmers over the past 2 summers, with a number of hardy folk swimming throughout the year and others gathering for a frequent social swim. One such regular, on reading the Linda Norgrove Foundation newsletter about their sponsored swim challenge, organised an inaugural swimming event to raise money for this cause. A 500 metre triangular route was marked out in the bay and most swimmers, on a recent Sunday afternoon, did this twice to reach the 1km target. A few joined up as a relay to complete the distance. Fiddle music and a stretching work-out added to the occasion; volunteers provided kayak support and welcome cake after the swim.

Through registration fees and donations, the group of 11 swimmers raised some £620. This has been generously matched in large part with a donation of £500 by Róis Scottish Sea Glass to a total of over £1,100 and rising.

Lorna and John Norgrove send their congratulations to all of the swimmers who took part and also to the sponsors – “a fantastic achievement on everyone’s part”. They say: “We intend to fulfil our commitment to support all of our sponsored students currently studying in Afghanistan. We heard today from one university that they are able to continue classes for women and we are planning to increase the number of students we sponsor this autumn. We will not abandon our other projects either although our emphasis is sure to change as we adapt to the changing circumstances under the new regime and the growing humanitarian crisis”.
